How to Build a Catapult from Popsicle Sticks

Building a popsicle stick catapult is a fantastic way to explore engineering concepts while having fun.

This simple DIY project uses everyday materials and provides hours of entertainment as you launch small objects through the air.

Perfect for kids and adults, this craft is a great STEAM activity that encourages problem-solving and creativity. Let’s get started!

Materials Needed

  • 10 popsicle sticks
  • 3 rubber bands
  • 1 water bottle cap (or soda/milk cap)
  • Glue
  • Cotton balls or pom-poms (for launching)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Stack Eight Popsicle Sticks

Stack Eight craft sticks together and wrap a rubber band around each end to hold them tightly in place.

Step 2: Create the Launching Arm

Insert one stick from inside a bunch of eight tied sticks towards outside and place another stick on top.

Stack two craft sticks together and wrap a rubber band around one end, securing them together tightly.

Step 3: Attach the Cap

Glue the water bottle cap to the top end of the launching arm. Allow the glue to dry completely before use.

Step 4: Test the Catapult

Place a cotton ball or pom-pom inside the cap, press down on the launching arm, and release! Watch as your projectile soars through the air.

Ways to Modify Your Catapult

Use a Plastic Spoon: Instead of a bottle cap, attach a plastic spoon to improve launching power.

Experiment with Rubber Band Placement: Adjust the tightness of the bands to change how far your object flies.

Try Different Projectiles: Test out marshmallows, paper balls, or lightweight beads to see which flies the farthest.

This easy and exciting STEAM activity is perfect for encouraging scientific thinking and hands-on learning. Try different designs, challenge your friends, and have fun launching objects with your homemade popsicle stick catapult! 🚀
