DIY Clay Leaf Bowls

There’s something so magical about the colors and textures of autumn, and this craft is the perfect way to bring that beauty into your home.

Using a real leaf as a mold, you can create stunning, intricate bowls that are perfect for holding jewelry, small trinkets, or even a tiny candle to cast a warm, cozy glow.

This project is wonderfully simple, deeply satisfying, and results in a piece of decor that looks elegant and handmade. Let’s get crafting!

What You’ll Need:

  • White air-dry clay
  • A rolling pin
  • A real or high-quality faux autumn leaf (a maple leaf works beautifully)
  • A small, sharp craft knife or clay tool
  • A small, oven-safe bowl for shaping
  • Acrylic paints in various autumn colors (reds, oranges, yellows, browns)
  • Paintbrushes
  • Parchment paper

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Roll Out Your Clay

Start by taking a piece of your air dry clay and kneading it until it’s soft and pliable. Place it on a smooth, non stick surface and use your rolling pin to roll it out into an even, flat slab, about 1/4 inch thick.

Step 2: Imprint the Leaf

Take your beautiful autumn leaf and press it firmly onto the surface of the clay, vein side down. You can use your rolling pin to gently roll over it one more time to ensure every delicate detail of the leaf’s texture is imprinted into the clay.

Step 3: Cut Out the Leaf Shape

Using your craft knife, carefully trace around the edges of the leaf, cutting through the clay to create a perfect leaf shaped cutout. Gently peel away the excess clay from the outside.

Step 4: Shape and Dry Your Bowl

Carefully lift your clay leaf and gently press it into a small bowl, which will act as a mold. This will give your leaf a lovely, natural, curved shape. Let the clay dry completely according to the package directions this may take 24-48 hours.

Step 5: Paint Your Creation

Once your clay leaf bowl is fully dry and hard, it’s time to bring it to life with color! Using your acrylic paints, have fun blending different autumn shades to replicate the beautiful, variegated colors of a real fall leaf.

Don’t be afraid to mix reds, oranges, and browns to create a rich, realistic look. You can even paint the underside a different, complementary color.

Your gorgeous clay leaf bowl is now complete! Create a few in different colors and sizes to make a stunning display on a tray or shelf. They are a beautiful, lasting way to celebrate the magic of the season. Happy crafting.
