Christmas Light Suncatchers

We love creating diy suncatchers.

They are such a fun little project for children of all ages. They work on great skills like fine motor control and color recognition.

Today, we are excited to add this Christmas Light Suncatcher craft to our growing collection of suncatcher crafts for kids.

This design lets children color and decorate a string of Christmas lights. Once finished, it glows beautifully when hung in a sunny window.

Want another glowing holiday decoration? Pair this craft with our Christmas Tree Sun Catcher Craft for a festive window display.

Craft Supplies

  • Printable Christmas light suncatcher template
  • Scissors
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Contact paper, optional for a true stained glass effect
  • Tissue paper in a variety of colors, optional
  • Glue dots or double sided tape for hanging

Instructions

Step 1: Color the Christmas light bulbs using the printable template.

Kids can choose bright, bold colors for each bulb. Patterns and swirls inside each bulb add extra visual interest.

Step 2: Cut around the outside dashed line of the string of lights.

Little scissors work best for small hands here. Help younger children with the curved edges around each bulb.

Step 3: For a true stained glass effect, add contact paper and tissue paper.

Stick contact paper down with the sticky side facing up. Place the cut light string on top and smooth the edges flat.

Step 4: Fill each bulb shape with small pieces of colorful tissue paper.

This step creates a beautiful glowing effect once the craft catches sunlight. Let your child choose any colors they like.

Step 5: Trim away any extra contact paper around the outside edges.

Young children may need a little help with this part. It keeps the finished suncatcher looking clean and neat.

Step 6: Hang your Christmas Light Suncatcher in a bright window using a glue dot or tape.

Watch as the sunlight shines through each colorful bulb. The finished craft looks just like a glowing string of lights.

Why This Craft Is So Great For Kids

This project builds important skills while staying fun and festive. It feels like play, yet it teaches real hands on abilities.

Coloring and decorating each bulb supports creativity and color recognition. Cutting around the curved shapes strengthens scissor control.

Working with tissue paper and contact paper builds fine motor precision. Children also learn patience as they complete each careful step.

Best of all, kids feel proud displaying their glowing creation. That pride makes the whole process feel meaningful and rewarding.

This craft fits beautifully into many holiday settings. It works well for both quiet crafting and festive group activities.

Teachers can use it as a calm classroom project before winter break. Students love watching their finished lights shine near a window.
