Hello, fellow parents and educators! As the air turns crisp and the leaves begin their spectacular transformation, it’s the perfect time to bring the beauty of autumn indoors with some fun and creative crafts.
Today, I’m sharing three of my favorite fall tree activities that are perfect for toddlers, preschoolers, and kids of all ages. Each one offers a unique sensory experience and a wonderful opportunity for hands on learning. Plus, I’ve got a free tree printable to help you get started on one of them!
1. Fall Leaf Finger Painting Tree
There’s nothing quite like the simple joy of finger painting! This craft is a fantastic sensory experience for little ones and creates a beautifully abstract piece of autumn art.
What You’ll Need:
- A sheet of white paper or cardstock
- Brown construction paper
- Washable finger paints in fall colors (red, orange, yellow)
- A paper plate
- Scissors and a glue stick
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Create Your Tree: Cut a tree trunk and several branches from your brown construction paper and glue them onto the white paper. Alternatively, you can also use our tree coloring page by downloading it and asking the children to color in the tree branches.
Prepare the Paint: Squeeze small dabs of your red, orange, and yellow finger paint onto a paper plate.
Get Painting! Let your little one dip their fingers into the paints and dot them all over the branches to create a vibrant canopy of fall leaves. Encourage them to mix the colors and get creative! The result is a beautiful, one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
2. Nature Art Tree with Real Leaves
Get outside and connect with nature with this wonderful craft that uses real leaves. It’s a great excuse for a fall nature walk and a beautiful way to preserve the colors of the season.
What You’ll Need:
- A sturdy piece of paper or cardboard
- A collection of real twigs to form a tree
- A collection of fallen autumn leaves in various colors
- Craft glue
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Go on a Nature Hunt: Head outside with your child to collect some interesting twigs and a variety of colorful fallen leaves.
Build Your Tree: Arrange and glue the twigs onto your paper to form the trunk and branches of your tree.
Chop the dried leaves:: you can also have them crush some of the crispy leaves into smaller pieces to sprinkle on as well.
Add the Leaves: Now, have your child glue the real leaves onto the branches. For a fun twist, Place the collected dry leaves on top of the tree branch and leave them to dry. Later, stand the paper upright so the remaining leaves fall off. This craft not only looks beautiful but also brings the wonderful textures of nature into your home.
3. Crushed Leaf Collage Tree
This activity is a fantastic sensory and fine motor workout for little hands! Crushing dried leaves is incredibly satisfying and creates a beautifully textured piece of art.
What You’ll Need:
- Free Bare Tree Printable (download link below!)
- A collection of dry, crunchy autumn leaves
- A large tub or tray for crushing leaves
- Washable craft glue
- A paintbrush or spatula for spreading the glue
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Print Your Tree: Start by downloading and printing the free bare tree template.
Crunch Time! Place your collection of dry leaves into a sensory bin or tray and let your child have fun crushing them into small pieces with their hands. This is a wonderfully satisfying sensory experience!
Prepare for Gluing: Using a paintbrush, have your child spread a layer of glue all over the branches of the tree printable.
Create Your Foliage: Let them scoop up handfuls of the crushed leaves and sprinkle them all over the glue-covered branches. Gently press the leaves down to make sure they stick.
The Big Reveal: Once the glue is dry, carefully lift the paper and shake off the excess leaf pieces to reveal your beautiful, textured autumn tree!
