How to Make a Kids Bottle Rocket

Looking for an exciting outdoor activity that will thrill kids while teaching them about chemical reactions and physics?

A homemade bottle rocket is a fantastic way to combine fun and learning! This experiment uses common household items and can launch 50-60 feet into the air!

Perfect for science experiments, STEM activities, or just a fun afternoon with the family, this project will also help kids practice following instructions while working together.

Why This Experiment is a Blast?

✅ Encourages hands-on learning through play
✅ Teaches kids about chemical reactions & pressure
✅ Reinforces listening and following instructions
✅ Provides an exciting and rewarding outdoor activity

Supplies Needed

  • 1 empty 2-liter plastic bottle
  • 2 cups of water
  • 1 cup of white vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • A paper towel (about 5×11 inches)
  • A cork (wrapped in duct tape for a tight fit)
  • A wooden board
  • A screw (at least 2 inches long)
  • Duct tape

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Bottle & Mixture
👦 Kids Can Help With This!

Pour 2 cups of water into the empty 2-liter bottle.

Add 1 cup of vinegar into the bottle.

Use this step to teach kids how to follow instructions by giving them simple directions like:

“Find a measuring cup.”

“Measure and pour 2 cups of water.”

“Now add 1 cup of vinegar.”

Celebrate their success when they complete the task!

Step 2: Make the Baking Soda Pack
This is the most crucial step because it triggers the explosion! 💥

Lay a paper towel flat.

Pour 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a line down the center.

Fold the paper towel hot dog style (lengthwise) to cover the baking soda.

Fold the ends in, then roll it up tightly so it fits inside the bottle’s opening.

🔴 Important: The packet should be compact enough to drop easily into the bottle.

Step 3: Build the Launch Pad
🚀 Adults Should Handle This Part

Take a wooden board and a 2-3 inch screw.

Screw the screw up through the board so it sticks out.

Wrap a cork in duct tape to ensure it fits tightly into the bottle.

Screw the cork onto the board—this will be your rocket launcher!

Step 4: Time for Liftoff!
🌳 Go Outside to a Big Open Space!

Hold the baking soda packet over the bottle opening.

In one quick motion, drop the baking soda packet inside and seal the bottle tightly with the cork.

Flip the entire bottle upside down onto the launch pad.

Step back and watch the explosion happen! 🎆

The reaction will build pressure inside the bottle, and within seconds to a minute, the rocket will shoot into the air!

The Science Behind the Bottle Rocket

This experiment works due to a chemical reaction between vinegar (acid) and baking soda (base).

1️⃣ When baking soda mixes with vinegar, it creates carbon dioxide (CO₂) gas.
2️⃣ The gas builds up inside the sealed bottle, creating pressure.
3️⃣ When the pressure becomes too much, it forces the cork out—sending the bottle flying!

This is the same concept that real rockets use, except they burn fuel to create thrust instead of using baking soda and vinegar!

Fun Variations to Try!

🟢 Try Different Vinegar Amounts – More vinegar might create a bigger explosion!

🔴 Experiment with Different Bottle Sizes – Does a 1-liter bottle fly as high as a 2-liter?

🔵 Add Food Coloring – Make colorful rocket fuel for added visual effects!

🟠 Use a Stopwatch – Time how long each launch takes. Does changing ingredients affect the speed?

Safety Tips & Cleanup

✔ Always do this experiment outdoors—rockets can go high and land unpredictably!
✔ Wear safety goggles for extra protection.
✔ Have kids stand back after flipping the bottle—the launch is sudden!
✔ Clean up vinegar spills to prevent attracting bugs or damaging grass.

Final Thoughts: An Experiment That’s Out of This World!

This DIY Bottle Rocket Experiment is an exciting and educational way for kids to explore chemistry, physics, and problem-solving while having a blast (literally)! Whether you’re doing this for fun, a science fair, or an outdoor learning day, it’s guaranteed to be a crowd favorite.

Try it out and let me know—how high did your rocket fly?
