St. Patrick's Day Math Crafts: Addition & Subtraction Practice

Math fact fluency is a crucial skill for first and second graders, but let’s be honest drilling flashcards can get boring fast.

If you are looking for a way to make addition and subtraction practice engaging, hands on, and festive, you are going to love our St. Patrick’s Day “Pot of Gold” Math Crafts!

We have created a bundle of 12 Free Printable A4 Worksheets designed to help students master their math facts while creating a fun holiday decoration. Each page features a “target number” on a pot of gold, and kids have to find the matching coins to fill it up.

Why This Activity Works for Grades 1 & 2

  • Active Learning: It involves solving, cutting, and pasting, which keeps active kids focused longer than a standard worksheet.
  • Mental Math: Students have to solve multiple equations to find the correct answer.
  • Self-Checking: By finding the equations that equal the big number on the pot, students learn to double check their work.
  • Differentiated Learning: The target numbers range from 15 to 50, allowing you to assign easier pots to beginners and more challenging ones to advanced students.

What’s Included in the Bundle?

This pack contains 12 unique worksheets, each focusing on a different target number. Here is a breakdown of the specific numbers included:

  • Number 15: Simple addition (8+7) and subtraction (19-4). Great for beginners!
  • Number 18: Mix of teen numbers and basic facts.
  • Number 25: Introduction to adding and subtracting larger numbers.
  • Number 27: Challenges students with regrouping.
  • Number 30: Practice with multiples of 10 and 5.
  • Number 32: Adding double digits.
  • Number 35: Focuses on numbers ending in 5.
  • Number 38: Advanced subtraction practice.
  • Number 40: Working with round numbers.
  • Number 42: Higher level addition.
  • Number 45: Requires solid mental math skills.
  • Number 50: The ultimate challenge! (e.g., 25+25, 60-10).

Each worksheet features 12 gold coins at the top, each with a different equation. Only 7 of the coins correspond to the correct answer on the pot. The rest are “distractors” to keep kids thinking!

How to Use These Math Crafts

Solve: Have your student solve the equations on all 12 coins at the top of the page. Tip: Have them write the answer inside the coin so they don’t forget!

Color: Let them color the coins gold and the pot black (or green!).

Cut: Carefully cut out the 7 coins that equal the target number on the pot. Discard the ones that don’t match.

Paste: Glue the correct coins onto the blank circles inside the pot of gold.

Display: Once dry, cut out the pot entirely and pin it to a classroom bulletin board or the fridge for a festive St. Patrick’s Day display!
