Get ready for a project that combines art, science, and a whole lot of fun! With just a few simple items, you can create a little robot that comes to life and dances all on its own. It’s a fantastic way to learn about the magic of electricity and magnetism.
This is a perfect activity for a curious afternoon, and you’ll be amazed when you see your creation start to spin. Let’s build it!
What You’ll Need:
- A single AA battery
- A few small, strong neodymium magnets (the round, flat kind)
- A piece of bare copper wire
- Paper
- Markers or colored pencils
- Scissors
- Tape
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Shape Your Robot’s Wire Body

Take your copper wire and carefully bend it into a symmetrical shape that will fit around the AA battery. Start by creating a small divot or point at the very top center this is what will rest on the positive tip of the battery.
From there, bend the wire down on both sides, creating the robot’s “body.” Make sure the bottom of the wire has two small “feet” that flare out slightly. It’s very important that both sides are balanced so your robot doesn’t tip over.
Step 2: Design and Draw Your Robot

Now for the creative part! On your piece of paper, draw the parts for your robot. You’ll need a head, a body, and two arms. Feel free to give your robot any fun expression or design you can imagine! Once you’re happy with your drawing, color it in with your markers.
Step 3: Assemble Your Paper Robot

Carefully cut out all the robot parts you drew. Using small pieces of tape, attach the paper head to the top of your copper wire frame and stick the arms onto the sides. Your character is now ready for action!
Step 4: Build the Magnetic Base

Take your neodymium magnets and stick them to the flat, negative end of the AA battery. This stack of magnets will be the base that your robot stands on.
Step 5: Let the Dancing Begin!

It’s time for the magic moment! Carefully place your robot onto the battery. Make sure the small point at the top of the wire is touching the positive nub of the battery, and the two wire “feet” at the bottom are resting on the magnets.
As soon as the wire touches both ends, it completes an electrical circuit. This creates a simple motor, and your robot will immediately start to spin and dance around the battery! Watch it go, and have fun experimenting with different wire shapes and robot designs.
