5 Minute DIY Activity is a Game

Is getting your toddler to brush their teeth a daily battle? You’re not alone. The “no’s,” the tears, and the tight-lipped refusals can turn a simple hygiene routine into a stressful event for everyone.

But what if you could transform that struggle into a moment of fun and learning?

Get ready to try a brilliant, simple, and incredibly effective activity that turns the chore of brushing into an exciting game. Your little one will be asking to “brush the germs away” in no time!

What You’ll Need:

  • A drawing or a printable of a large, open mouth with teeth (You’ll find it below in a free printable PDF format. or draw a simple one yourself).
  • A clear plastic sheet protector.
  • A dry-erase marker (any color works, but blue or black shows up well).
  • An old or spare toothbrush.
  • Tape.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare Your Interactive Mouth

First, take your drawing of the mouth and slide it into the clear plastic sheet protector. This creates a reusable, wipeable surface that’s perfect for the activity.

Step 2: Add the “Sugar Bugs”!

Now for the fun part! Using your dry erase marker, draw little dots, squiggles, or “bugs” all over the teeth on the plastic sheet.

These are the naughty “germs” or “sugar bugs” that need to be cleaned away. Feel free to get creative and make them look silly!

Step 3: Set Up the Brushing Station

Find a spot on a wall that’s at your child’s height. Using a couple of pieces of tape on the top and bottom, secure the sheet protector to the wall.

This makes it a stable and accessible station for your little dentist-in-training.

Step 4: Time to Brush!

Hand your child the spare toothbrush and explain their mission: “Oh no, look at all the yucky sugar bugs on these teeth! Can you help brush them all away and make the teeth clean and sparkly?”

Watch as your child eagerly gets to work, using the toothbrush to scrub away the dry erase marks.

They’ll love seeing the “germs” disappear with their brushing efforts. The physical act of scrubbing is fantastic for developing their fine motor skills, too.

Step 5: Connect the Game to Reality

Once all the drawn on germs are gone, you can celebrate their success! This is the perfect moment to transition to brushing their own teeth.

You can say something like, “You did such a great job cleaning those teeth! Now, let’s brush the real sugar bugs out of your mouth so your teeth can be just as clean and healthy.”

This activity brilliantly connects the concept of cleaning germs with the real act of brushing, making the entire process less abstract and much more engaging for a young child.

Give this simple activity a try tonight and watch the toothbrushing battles melt away. Happy brushing.
