How to Make Your Paper Puppets

This craft is great for practicing fine motor skills like coloring, cutting, and folding.

Supplies Needed:

  • Our Free Printable PDF templates (linked below)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick or tape

Instructions:

Color: Start by coloring in the character. It is much easier to color on the full sheet of paper before cutting.

Cut: Carefully cut out the main body shape and the two rectangular strips (these are the handles).

Fold the Mouth: Look for the dotted lines across the mouth area. You want to make an “Accordion Fold” (or an M shape).

  • Fold the top line back.
  • Fold the middle line forward.
  • Fold the bottom line back.
  • Now, when you squeeze it, the mouth should close!

Attach the Handles: Flip the puppet over. Glue the two rectangular strips to the back one on the top half of the head, and one on the bottom jaw. These create loops for your fingers and thumb to slide into.

Play: Slide your hand into the loops and open and close your hand to make the puppet talk!

Activity Idea: Encourage your children to write a short script or sing a Christmas carol using their new puppet friends. It’s a wonderful way to boost confidence and creativity!

Merry Christmas and Happy Puppeteering!
