Splat! Create a Hilariously Fun Poppable Bug Craft

Looking for a craft that’s more than just cute? Get ready for some hands-on, splat-tastic fun!

This poppable bug craft, is a guaranteed giggle-inducer. It combines drawing, coloring, and a surprisingly satisfying “splat” at the end.

It’s the perfect activity for a boring afternoon or a fun little prank to play with friends and family.

Let’s get making!

What You’ll Need:

  • White paper (cardstock is sturdier, but regular paper works too)
  • Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Bubble wrap
  • A syringe or small dropper
  • Red liquid (you can use watered-down red paint or water with red food coloring)
  • Glue or double-sided tape

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Step 1: Draw and Color Your Bugs

First, let’s bring our little critters to life! On a sheet of paper, draw several simple cartoons of a fly or mosquito.

If drawing isn’t your strong suit, You can make your coloring activity fun and easy by downloading our Bugs and Mosquito Coloring Pages.

These pages are simple to print, enjoyable to color, and perfect for both kids and adults.

Once you have your outlines, grab your markers and give each bug a unique and vibrant color scheme. Go wild with different colored bodies and wings!

Step 2: Carefully Cut Them Out

After your bugs are all colored in and looking bright, it’s time for a trim. Carefully use your scissors to cut out each bug, leaving a small white border around the outline. This will help them stand out.

Step 3: Prepare the Secret ‘Splat’ Pack

Now for the magic ingredient! Take a piece of bubble wrap. Using a syringe or a small dropper, carefully inject a small amount of your red liquid into a few of the bubbles.

You don’t need to fill them completely—just a few drops will do the trick.
(Note: Adult supervision is recommended for this step, especially if using a syringe with a sharp tip.)

Step 4: Attach the Pack to Your Bug

With your scissors, cut out the small section of bubble wrap that you just filled. Apply a bit of glue or a piece of double-sided tape to the back of one of your paper bugs.

Firmly press the filled bubble wrap section onto the back of the bug.

Step 5: It’s Time for a Splat!

Your poppable bug is ready for action! Place your finished bug on a fresh sheet of paper, colorful side up. Take a deep breath and… SPLAT!

Press down firmly and quickly on the bug with your hand. The bubble wrap will pop, releasing the red liquid in a dramatic splatter, making it look like you’ve just squashed a very juicy bug!

And there you have it! A simple, interactive craft that’s a blast to make and even more fun to pop. Create a whole swarm of them and enjoy the splat-tastic results.
