St. Patrick’s Day Kindergarten Phonics Activity

If you are looking for a golden way to practice the alphabet this March, you are in luck. We have created a hands on St. Patrick’s Day Phonics Activity that combines the excitement of a treasure hunt with essential literacy skills.

Introducing our Pot of Gold Letter Sounds Sort! This free printable A4 pack is designed to help preschoolers and kindergarteners master their beginning sounds and upper/lowercase letter recognition.

What’s Inside This Phonics Bundle?

This isn’t just a simple worksheet; it’s a complete sorting game. We have created a Pot of Gold for every letter of the alphabet (A-Z).

For each letter, you get:

A Large Pot of Gold: Labeled with the uppercase letter (e.g., a big “A”).

4 Gold Coins to Sort:

  • 1 Letter Coin: Featuring the corresponding lowercase letter (e.g., “a”). This helps with case matching!
  • 3 Picture Coins: Featuring items that start with that specific letter (e.g., for ‘A’ you get an Ambulance, an Astronaut, and an Apple).

    Educational Benefits

    • Phonemic Awareness: Kids have to say the word on the picture coin and identify the starting sound.
    • Letter Recognition: Matching the Big Pot (Uppercase) to the Little Coin (Lowercase).
    • Vocabulary Building: Naming the various objects on the coins.
    • Fine Motor Skills: Picking up small coins (or cutting them out) builds hand strength.

How to Prepare & Use the Activity

    1. Print and Prep

Download the free A4 PDF files below.

    • For a One Time Craft: Print on standard paper. Have students color the pots (if you print the black and white version) and cut out the coins.
    • For a Reusable Center: Print on cardstock and laminate the pots and the coins. This ensures they last for years!

    2. The Setup

Place the Pots of Gold in a row (or start with just 3-4 letters at a time to avoid overwhelming beginners). Scatter the gold coins in a pile—this is your “treasure heap.”

    3. The Activity: Sort the Treasure!

Have the child pick up a coin.

    • If it’s a letter coin: Ask, “Is this a big letter or a small letter? Which pot does it belong to?”
    • If it’s a picture coin: Ask, “What is this a picture of? What sound does it start with?” (e.g., “B-B-Bear! That goes in the B pot!”).

The goal is to fill every Pot of Gold with its four matching coins.

    Fun Variations for the Classroom

    • Sensory Bin Hunt: Hide the gold coins in a bin filled with green-dyed rice or dry pasta. Kids have to dig for the gold and match it to the pots on the table.
    • Scavenger Hunt: Tape the Pots of Gold around the room. Give the kids a handful of coins and have them walk around to deposit the “gold” in the correct bank.
    • Paste Project: Let students choose the first letter of their name, cut out that specific pot and coins, and glue them onto a piece of construction paper for a personalized door decoration.

Teacher Tip: When cutting the coins, you can use a 1.5-inch or 2-inch circle punch to save time and make them perfectly round!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! We hope your little leprechauns enjoy learning their letters.
