Free Valentine’s Day Math Puzzles Count to Activity

Love is in the air… and so is learning! Valentine’s Day is the perfect occasion to add a little sweetness to your math lessons.

We are excited to share our Valentine’s Day “Heart Puzzle” Math Pack.

This set of 5 Free Printable A4 Pages contains 10 unique puzzles (Numbers 1-10). These aren’t just cute hearts; they are powerful educational tools designed to help toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergarteners understand the different ways numbers can be represented.

What Do These Puzzles Teach?

Each heart is divided into four puzzle pieces. To solve the puzzle, children must match four different representations of the same number:

The Digit: The standard number (e.g., “5“).

The Word: The number written out in English (e.g., “FIVE“).

Tally Marks: Counting lines (e.g., IIIII). This is a fantastic introduction to grouping by fives!

The Shape: The puzzle pieces themselves only fit together one way, providing a self-correcting mechanism so kids know if they got it right.

    How to Prepare & Play

    1. Print and Prep

    • Download the PDF files below.
    • Recommendation: Print on white cardstock for durability. If you plan to use these in a classroom year after year, laminating the pages before cutting is a great idea!

    2. Cut the Hearts

    • Cut out the large heart shape first.
    • Then, carefully cut along the wavy/jigsaw lines in the middle to separate the top and bottom halves.

    3. Mix and Match

    • Beginner Level: Start with just numbers 1-3. Mix up the pieces on the table and have your child find the matches.
    • Advanced Level: Mix all 10 puzzles (20 pieces) together! Challenge your students to reassemble all the broken hearts.

    4. Group Activity

    • Give one piece to each student in the class. Have them walk around and find their “heart partner” who has the matching half! (e.g., The student with “7” must find the student with “Seven” and tally marks).
