Free Presidents' Day Spelling & Vocabulary Worksheets (Literacy & Logic Fun!)

Presidents’ Day is a great time to learn about history, but it’s also a perfect opportunity to sneak in some spelling and vocabulary practice!

We are excited to share our Presidents’ Day Literacy & Logic Pack.

This set of 5 Free Printable A4 Worksheets is designed to help elementary students master holiday-themed words through puzzles, codes, and writing exercises. It turns spelling practice into a game!

What’s Inside This Literacy Pack?

Here is a breakdown of the five fun activities included in your free download:

1. Presidential Vowel Quest

What it is: The vowels (A, E, I, O, U) have gone missing! Kids must look at the “skeleton” words (like PR_S_D_NT and W_SH_NGT_N) and fill in the correct vowels from the Vowel Bank to complete the word.
How to use it:

  • Phonics Practice: Ask your child to say the word out loud to hear which vowel sound fits. Does “History” need an ‘I’ or an ‘O’?
  • Spelling: This helps kids visualize word structure without the pressure of spelling the whole word from scratch.

2. Unscramble the Monument

What it is: A word scramble challenge! We have taken 10 Presidents’ Day words (like LINCOLN, FLAG, and FEBRUARY) and mixed up the letters. Students must unscramble them and write the correct spelling on the line.
How to use it:

  • Problem Solving: If they get stuck, tell them to count the letters. If the scrambled word has 5 letters, the answer must have 5 letters too!
  • Vocabulary: Discuss what words like “Monument” and “Liberty” mean after they unscramble them.

3. Crossword Commander

What it is: A classic crossword puzzle featuring clues about US history.

  • Clue: “The bald _____ is our national bird.” (Eagle)
  • Clue: “The US capital city?” (Washington)
    How to use it:
  • Reading Comprehension: Kids have to read the clue and use context to find the answer.
  • Spelling Check: Since the letters interlock, if they spell one word wrong, the next one won’t fit! It encourages them to self-correct.

4. Match & Spell the Symbols

What it is: A handwriting and connection activity. On the left, there are icons (Eagle, Statue of Liberty, Hat, Flag). On the right, students must find the matching word and then practice writing it neatly on the dotted lines.
How to use it:

  • Handwriting: The dotted lines are perfect for practicing letter formation.
  • Word Recognition: Helps younger kids associate the written word “EAGLE” with the picture of the bird.

5. Secret Patriotic Message

What it is: A picture code breaker! Kids look at the first letter of each small picture to form a new word.

  • Example: Pig + Elephant + Nest = PEN.
  • This worksheet uses symbols to spell out words like “PEACE” and “LOVE,” leading to a final secret message at the bottom.
    How to use it:
  • Beginning Sounds: This is excellent for phonemic awareness. “What sound does ‘Lion’ start with?”
  • Reward: The “secret message” aspect keeps kids motivated to finish the whole page to crack the code.

Teacher Tip: These worksheets are great for “Word Work” centers or as a fun homework packet for the long Presidents’ Day weekend.
