Looking for a hands on way to teach geometry, shapes, and spatial reasoning? Pattern blocks are a classic classroom staple for a reason!
We are excited to share our Pattern Block Mats Activity Pack.
This set of 7 Free Printable A4 Worksheets turns playing with shapes into a powerful learning experience. Kids place pattern blocks (like hexagons, trapezoids, and rhombuses) onto the templates to build fun pictures. Plus, each page features counting and math questions to extend the learning!
What are Pattern Blocks?
Pattern blocks are a set of geometric shapes that fit together perfectly. The standard set includes:
- Yellow Hexagon (6 sides)
- Red Trapezoid (4 sides)
- Green Triangle (3 sides)
- Orange Square (4 sides)
- Blue Rhombus (Diamond)
- Tan Rhombus (Skinny Diamond)
What’s Inside This Activity Pack?
We have designed 7 engaging mats, each with a different difficulty level and theme.

Blast off! This simple design uses squares, triangles, and trapezoids.
- Math Question: “How many corners does the Orange Square have?” (Answer: 4)
2. The Wiggle Worm
A long, colorful caterpillar made of hexagons, squares, and triangles.
- Math Question: “Look at the pattern: Triangle, Square… What comes next?” (This teaches sequencing!)
3. The Big Fish
Dive deep with this complex puzzle! It challenges kids to fill a large fish shape using mostly blue rhombuses and tan rhombuses.
- Math Question: “Did you use more Blue Rhombuses or Red Trapezoids?” (A great comparison question).
4. The Turtle
Slow and steady wins the race. This design features a large yellow hexagon shell surrounded by square legs.

5. The Butterfly
Symmetry in action! This beautiful butterfly mirrors itself perfectly on both sides.
- Math Question: “Is this butterfly symmetrical?” (Answer: YES).

Beep boop! This square robot head uses squares, diamonds, and trapezoids to make a face.
- Math Question: “Which of these shapes has 6 sides?” (Answer: Hexagon).
Bonus: The Flower
- Math Question: “If you put 2 Green Triangles together along the long side, what shape do they make?” (Answer: Blue Rhombus).
