Is it possible to fall in love with math? We think so! With Valentine’s Day around the corner, it’s the perfect time to add some heart themed fun to your multiplication lessons.
We are excited to share our expanded Valentine’s Day Multiplication Word Problem Bundle.
This set of 8 Free Printable A4 Worksheets uses a unique “Read It, Draw It, Answer It” framework. This visual method is a game changer for second graders, helping them transition from simple addition to understanding the concept of multiplication (groups of numbers).
The “Read, Draw, Answer” Strategy
Why do these worksheets work so well?
Read It: Students practice reading comprehension by identifying the key numbers in the story.
Draw It: They visualize the problem by drawing the groups (e.g., 3 hives with 3 bees).
Answer It: They translate their drawing into a mathematical equation.
What’s Inside This 8 Page Bundle?
We have created 8 distinct problems featuring adorable garden critters and flowers. Here is a breakdown of the math skills in each one:

1. Grandma’s Daisies
- Problem: 6 pots x 2 daisies.
- Skill: Doubling numbers and counting by 2s.
2. The Lily Pad Pond
- Problem: 5 lily pads x 3 frogs.
- Skill: Visualizing groups of 3 (Repeated addition: 3+3+3+3+3).
3. Mia’s Sunflower Seeds
- Problem: 5 packets x 4 seeds.
- Skill: Introduction to the 4s and 5s times tables.
4. Fuzzy Caterpillars
- Problem: 2 caterpillars x 10 legs.
- Skill: Skip counting by 10s (a crucial skill for 2nd grade!).
5. Flying Bees
- Problem: 4 beehives x 3 bees.
- Skill: Understanding groups! Students must draw 3 bees for each of the 4 hives to visualize that 4 groups of 3 equals 12.
6. The Tulip Garden
- Problem: 3 rows x 5 tulips.
- Skill: Understanding Arrays (rows and columns) which is the foundation of area models.
7. Ladybug Spots
- Problem: 7 ladybugs x 2 spots.
- Skill: Multiplying 7 by 2. This is great for practice since 7 can be a tricky number for kids.
8. Butterfly Wings
- Problem: 6 butterflies x 4 wings.
- Skill: A slightly harder challenge! Multiplying 6 by 4 encourages kids to group numbers carefully in their drawing.
How to Use in the Classroom or at Home
- “Problem of the Day”: Start your math block with one sheet each day leading up to Valentine’s Day.
- Group Work: Pair students up. One reads the problem, the other draws it, and they solve the equation together.
- Assessment: Use these sheets to quickly check if a student understands the concept of multiplication, not just rote memorization.
