Valentine’s Day "Build & Color" Popsicle Stick Activity

Looking for a Valentine’s Day activity that is more than just a coloring page? We have the perfect solution!

We are excited to share our Valentine’s Day Popsicle Stick “Build & Color” Mats.

This set of 8 Free Printable A4 Worksheets combines art, engineering, and math into one engaging activity. Children don’t just color the picture; they “build” parts of it using real popsicle sticks (craft sticks). It is a fantastic way to develop fine motor skills and spatial awareness while celebrating the season of love.

What is a “Build & Color” Activity?

These worksheets feature bold, rectangular outlines incorporated into the design. The child’s job is to place a wooden popsicle stick over these outlines to complete the image.

It turns a 2D coloring page into a 3D tactile experience! Plus, there is a math component at the bottom of every page where kids count how many sticks they used.

What’s Inside This Bundle?

We have designed 8 unique mats featuring adorable Valentine’s themes. Here is what your kids can build:

Cupid’s Arrow: Build the shaft of the arrow flying through the air.

Love Letter Envelope: Construct the triangular flap of a sealed Valentine.

L-O-V-E Sign: Use sticks to form the straight lines of the letters L, V, and E.

Tic-Tac-Toe: Build the grid board (and maybe play a game with candy hearts!).

Heart Wand: Construct the handle of a magical fairy wand.

Birdhouse: Build the walls and roof for a little love bird.

Garden Fence: Create a picket fence behind a bed of heart-flowers.

Cloud Ladder: Build the rungs of a ladder reaching up to the heart clouds.

How to Use This Activity with Kids

    1. Gather Your Supplies

    You only need three things:

    • Our printed PDF templates (Standard A4 size).
    • Standard-sized Popsicle sticks (craft sticks).
    • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils.
    • Optional: Glue (if you want to make the art permanent).

    2. Color First

Encourage your child to color the background images (the hearts, flowers, clouds, and birds) before placing the sticks. It is much easier to color without the wood in the way!

    3. Build the Image

Have the child place a popsicle stick over every rectangular outline on the page.

    • Fine Motor Challenge: They must line the stick up perfectly with the rectangle so it fits inside the lines.
    • Creative Twist: Let kids color the wooden sticks with markers before placing them to add more color to the picture!

    4. Count and Write

At the bottom of every page, there is a prompt: “Count how many popsicle sticks you used.”
Have the child count the sticks on their paper and write the number on the line. This adds a great counting and number-writing element to the craft.

    Two Ways to Play

Reusable Math Center: Laminate the pages. Have students place plain sticks on the mats, count them, and then clear the page for the next student.

Permanent Craft: Have students use liquid glue or a glue stick to attach the sticks to the paper. This creates a textured 3D art piece they can take home to parents.
